Mumbai's monorail service is expected to restart within the next two weeks after remaining closed for almost nine months. According to reports, the Maharashtra government's Urban Development Department has given final approval to resume operations on the 19.54-km route between Mahalaxmi and Jacob's Circle. Officials said that the remaining work,

including station painting and interior finishing, is nearly complete. The service is likely to be inaugurated within the next 10 to 15 days, although the reopening could be pushed to July if required.
Mumbai Monorail Service to Resume
The monorail services were suspended in September 2025 due to repeated technical issues and frequent breakdowns. When operations resume, passengers will travel on 10 newly introduced train rakes supplied by Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives. These modern trains are expected to provide more reliable services and reduce waiting times between trains.
Before the shutdown, commuters often faced long delays. During peak hours, trains arrived every 20 to 25 minutes, and in some cases, passengers had to wait more than 45 minutes due to technical faults. With the new trains, authorities aim to bring the gap between services down to around 15 minutes.
Officials had also planned to upgrade older monorail trains with a modern Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system. However, the project is still pending because some imported components required for the upgrade have not yet arrived.
How will the New Monorail Services Improve Transport Connectivity?
The monorail's return is expected to improve public transport connectivity in central Mumbai. The Mahalaxmi monorail station will be linked to Metro Line 3 and the Mahalaxmi railway station. A skywalk equipped with travellators is also being built to help passengers move easily between the different transport facilities.
Authorities are also planning to open the Chembur station on Metro Line 2B, improving connectivity to Mumbai's eastern suburbs and extending travel options up to Mandale.
Revision of Fares
Meanwhile, commuters may face higher fares in the future. A proposal has been submitted to revise ticket prices, with one option increasing fares to match metro rates. If approved, the maximum fare for the full monorail journey could rise from Rs 40 to Rs 70. Officials say the increase would help cover the cost of the new train fleet and maintenance expenses. Additionally, new operating procedures will be introduced to manage passenger movement and prevent overcrowding.
