Mangalore to Katra Train New Route
Travelling from Mangalore to Katra, the gateway to the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi, is about to become faster and more convenient. The Kanyakumari-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) - Kanyakumari Himsagar Weekly Express, which currently takes a lengthy 70 hours to cover the extensive distance of 3,686 kilometres, is now looking at a rerouting option through the Konkan Network. This change is set to shorten the route by 215 kilometres and make the journey 20 hours faster.

A Proposal to Benefit Passengers
This rerouting proposal originates from the Kanyakumari District Rail Users' Association, and its potential benefits extend to passengers from both Kanyakumari and Mangalore. The association notes that there's currently no direct rail link between coastal Karnataka and Jammu, especially following the cancellation of the Mangaluru Central - SVDK Navayug Weekly Express.
A Scenic and Enjoyable Journey
The new route will pass through places like Madgaon, Panvel, Vadodara, Kota, Mathura, and New Delhi, before reaching Jammu Tawi and Katra¹. The association has also suggested extending the train route to Leh, another popular tourist destination in the northern region. This rerouting of the train promises not only a more efficient and less time-consuming journey but also a scenic and enjoyable one. Passengers will have the opportunity to witness India's diverse landscapes and cultures, from the coastal beauty of Mangalore to the mountainous splendor of Katra.
A Blessing for Pilgrims and Travelers
The train is expected to serve a large number of pilgrims and travelers visiting Jammu and coastal Karnataka for their religious and cultural heritage. The Vaishno Devi Shrine, situated in Katra town in Jammu and Kashmir, is one of India's most revered religious sites, dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi. Mangalore, on the other hand, is a melting pot of various religious communities, featuring a blend of temples, churches, and mosques. Notable Hindu religious sites in Mangalore include the Kadri Manjunatha Temple, Kudroli Gokarnath Temple, and Mangaladevi Temple.
Boosting Connectivity and Tourism
The rerouting of this train marks a significant step in enhancing rail connectivity and accessibility to these important destinations. It will also contribute to the tourism potential and economic development of these regions.
The Remarkable Konkan Network
The Konkan Network is a railway network that links the coastal regions of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala in India. Operated by the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL), a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, this network covers a vast distance of 741 kilometers and traverses some of the most breathtaking and challenging terrains in the country. Completed in 1998 and fully electrified in 2022, the network plays a pivotal role in facilitating the movement of passengers and goods between the southern and northern states of India, while also bolstering tourism potential in the coastal areas. Major stations on this network include Roha, Ratnagiri, Madgaon, Udupi, Mangaluru, and Thokur.

Overcoming Challenges in Building the Konkan Network
The construction of the Konkan Network was not without its challenges:
- The network had to navigate some of the most challenging terrain in India, including the rugged Western Ghats, necessitating the boring through hard volcanic rock, soft clay, and sand.
- Construction involved creating an impressive 93 tunnels, 157 major bridges, and 6,000 minor bridges to traverse mountains, valleys, and rivers along the route.
- Environmental and social issues, including land acquisition, forest clearance, wildlife conservation, tribal rehabilitation, and public protests, had to be addressed.
- Technical and financial constraints, such as funding shortages, material scarcities, outdated technology, and frequent accidents, were overcome.
As this ambitious rerouting project unfolds, it promises to connect regions more efficiently and enhance India's extensive rail network for the benefit of passengers and the development of key destinations.
