The Manaskhand Express, a special tourist train initiative by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), commenced its second journey to the picturesque Kumaon region of Uttarakhand on 22nd May 2024. Embarking from Pune at 5:00 pm, the train carries 302 passengers through a scenic route, touching stations like Lonavala, Kalyan, Vasai, Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, Ratlam, and Ujjain, before reaching Tanakpur railway station on 24th May 2024.

This innovative travel package is designed to showcase both major and off-the-beaten-path destinations within the Kumaon region, famously referred to as Manaskhand in ancient Indian texts. With a starting price of Rs 28,020, IRCTC offers a comprehensive 10 nights/11 days tour package, including arrangements for hotel stays, bus, and taxi commutes to various attractions.
The initiative, which follows the successful operation of its inaugural journey in April 2024 with 280 tourists, is a testament to the joint efforts of the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board and IRCTC to promote tourism in lesser-known areas. The second trip saw tourists being welcomed in traditional Marathi style, with drums, musical instruments, aarti, tilak application, and flower showers, reflecting the enthusiasm surrounding this unique travel experience.
Purnagiri Temple, Hatkalika Temple, and Jageshwar Dham and many more
The Manaskhand Express's journey includes visits to revered sites such as Purnagiri Temple, Hatkalika Temple, and Jageshwar Dham, among others, complemented by stays in destinations like Tanakpur, Champawat/Lohaghat, Chaukori, Almora, and Bhimtal. The train itself is a moving tribute to Uttarakhand's heritage, with its exterior and coaches artistically showcasing the state's natural, cultural, architectural, and spiritual elements. Inside, the train offers a comfortable 3AC travel experience, with each coupe accommodating only four passengers to ensure comfort.
The onboard pantry car promises a taste of Uttarakhandi cuisine, adding a flavorful dimension to the journey. After deboarding at Tanakpur, tourists will explore the Kumaon region's rich tapestry, including its temples, ashrams, tea gardens, and more, ensuring a memorable experience.
Shri Sachin Kurve, Secretary Tourism/Chief Executive Officer, Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, highlighted the initiative as a pioneering effort in India, aiming to boost tourism in the Kumaon's lesser-known locales. The successful launch of the Manaskhand Express's second phase from Pune, he noted, reflects the growing interest and enthusiasm among tourists for exploring new destinations.
With its blend of spiritual, natural, and cultural exploration, the Manaskhand Express offers a unique travel experience. It not only promotes Uttarakhand's tourism sector but also introduces travelers to the state's lesser-known gems, enhancing their travel experience and creating lasting memories.
