On June 8, 2025, hundreds of devotees gathered at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala. They came to witness the Maha Kumbhabhishekam, a grand consecration event held after 270 years. This significant ceremony followed the completion of long-overdue renovations at this ancient temple.

The temple authorities had made extensive arrangements for the event. Video walls were set up at all four entrances to allow devotees to view the rare ritual. Long queues formed early in the morning as people eagerly awaited entry into the shrine.
Maha Kumbhabhishekam Rituals
The rituals began with Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma, head of the Travancore royal family, offering prayers. The tantri, or head priest, performed the "Ashtabandha Kalasam" at Thiruvambady Temple within the main shrine complex. This was followed by the reinstallation of a 300-year-old Vishwaksena idol at 8:00 a.m.
The Vishwaksena idol was crafted using "katu sarkara yogam," a traditional method involving unique materials. After its reinstallation, priests and royal family members processed for the dedication of three domes above the sanctum sanctorum as devotees chanted "narayana" mantras.
Significance and Historical Context
The Maha Kumbhabhishekam aims to reinforce spiritual energy and renew the shrine's sanctity. Such comprehensive renovations and rituals have not occurred for over 270 years and are unlikely to happen again soon. The Supreme Court-appointed expert panel directed these renovations in 2017.
Though work began shortly after this directive, progress was delayed due to COVID-19. Renovations resumed in phases from 2021 onwards, culminating in this grand event. Various rituals like Acharya Varanam and Prasada Shuddhi were conducted in preceding days.
Cultural and Religious Importance
The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is deeply intertwined with Kerala's history and culture. Lord Vishnu is enshrined here in a reclining posture on serpent God 'Anantha'. The capital city of Kerala derives its name from this deity worshipped at the temple.
Kerala Governor Vishwanath Rajendra Arlekar attended the ceremony, witnessing its entirety. The dedication of "thazhikakudams" (domes) and other rituals marked a historic moment for both devotees and temple authorities alike.
