Kerala Rain & Thunderstorm Alert Amid Intense Heat in Several Districts of the State

Kerala is expected to receive light rain in many districts until April 26, but hot and humid weather will continue across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that rainfall of 2.5 mm and 15.5 mm may occur, often along with thunderstorms.

Kerala Yellow Alert

A yellow alert for hot and humid conditions is in place until April 24. Most districts, except Wayanad and Idukki, may see temperatures 3 to 4 degrees Celsius higher than normal. Palakkad is likely to be the hottest, with temperatures reaching around 40°C. Kollam may touch 39°C, while Alappuzha could see around 37°C. People are advised to avoid staying in direct sunlight for long periods.

Kerala Rain Alert

On Monday evening, light rain was reported in Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Wayanad. Some damage caused by rain and strong winds on Sunday was also reported in Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district. There is also a warning of thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds of 40-50 kmph in some places until April 22. Authorities have asked people to stay careful due to the risk of lightning strikes.

Heatwave in Other Parts of Kerala & Its Effects

Palakkad recorded a high temperature of 40°C on Monday, which is 3.6°C above normal. Humidity levels were 38% in Palakkad, while Thrissur recorded the highest humidity at 72%. Due to the extreme heat, the Palakkad district administration has taken emergency steps. Schools and colleges have been asked to switch to online classes immediately. Exams that cannot be delayed can be held offline in small groups with proper ventilation and drinking water. The heat has already caused serious issues, including a death due to dehydration, and another person collapsing while working.

Advisory for Residents

Health officials have warned people to avoid going out between 10 am and 4 pm. Hostels must ensure enough drinking water.
