KSRTC Enhances Intercity Travel With 300 New Electric Buses

KSRTC is set to introduce 300 electric buses, including 225 non-AC and 75 AC models, for intercity routes in Karnataka, promoting sustainable and efficient travel options.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to introduce 300 electric buses, comprising 225 non-AC and 75 AC models, on inter-city routes through a lease model. This initiative follows the launch of intercity AC e-buses under the 'EV Power Plus' segment in January 2023.

KSRTC officials have confirmed that these buses will be inducted on a Gross Cost Contract model for a duration of 12 years. A tender has already been invited for this purpose. The fleet will include 205 non-AC intercity buses with 2x3 seating, 75 deluxe AC intercity buses with reclining seats in a 2x2 configuration, and 20 non-AC city buses with 2x2 seating.

Focus on Intercity Routes

The new electric buses will serve various intercity routes such as Bengaluru-Tumakuru, Bengaluru-Kolar, and Bengaluru-Chikkaballapur. Specifically, the distribution includes 50 buses for Tumakuru, 45 each for Kolar and Mangaluru, 40 each for Chikkaballapur and Puttur, 30 for Mysuru Rural, and 20 each for Mysuru Urban and Ramanagara.

Under the lease model, KSRTC will provide only the conductor. The private firm responsible will hire drivers, operate and maintain the buses, and establish charging infrastructure. "We will pay them on a per km basis," stated a KSRTC official.

Operational Requirements

The selected firm must ensure each bus operates for at least 250 km daily and can cover up to 180 km on a single charge. These electric buses will be equipped with CCTVs, panic buttons, dash cameras, and other safety features to enhance passenger security.

In addition to the electric bus initiative, KSRTC has also invited tenders to supply 70 BS-VI diesel fully built non-AC sleeper coaches and 30 seater-cum-sleeper coaches. This move aims to diversify their fleet while maintaining service quality across different routes.

"Under the lease model, KSRTC will provide only the conductor, and the private firm will hire a driver, operate and maintain buses, as well as set up charging infrastructure. We will pay them on a per km basis," said a KSRTC official.

Previously launched under the Centre's FAME-II subsidy scheme in January 2023, all 50 e-buses are currently operational from Bengaluru to destinations like Mysuru, Madikeri, Virajpet, Davanagere, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru.

This strategic expansion of KSRTC's electric bus fleet signifies their commitment to sustainable transportation solutions while enhancing connectivity across Karnataka's key cities.
