Kolkata Metro plans to make its fare system completely app-based so that passengers can travel using only their mobile phones, said Subhransu Sekhar Mishra, General Manager of Metro Railway, during the system's Foundation Day event at New Esplanade station. The move aims to reduce queues for manual tickets and promote

digital payments through the metro's mobile app or smart cards.
Kolkata's Blue Line to Receive CBTC System
Mishra announced that repair work at Kavi Subhash station and on the stretch between Kavi Subhash and Shahid Khudiram will start next week, after being delayed due to the Chhath Puja festival. Moreover, he added that the Blue Line will soon receive a Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, which has already been approved. This modern signalling technology will help trains run more efficiently, cut down waiting times, and enhance safety. The project is expected to be completed in three to four years, along with other related engineering works.
Kolkata's Orange Line Construction
On the Orange Line, Mishra said construction is progressing well, and a large portion will be ready soon. Out of the 29-km stretch, nearly 19 km is expected to be operational by December 2026. This will be a major step forward in expanding the metro network and improving connectivity in Kolkata and its suburbs. Kolkata Metro, which began operations in 1984 as India's first metro system, has grown from a 3.4-km stretch to a vast network that now serves millions of daily commuters. During the Foundation Day celebration, officials also hosted a magic show to promote cleanliness and good behaviour among passengers.
Mishra concluded that the focus on app-based ticketing, upgraded signalling, and ongoing expansion shows Kolkata Metro's commitment to modernisation and providing a smoother, safer, and more convenient travel experience for the public.
