Kolkata's metro system is getting a major upgrade with the introduction of the new Orange Line. This new route will connect important parts of the city and make travel to the airport much easier. It is not just an expansion, but a major step to make public transport faster and more convenient for people living in and visiting Kolkata.

Kolkata Metro's History and Growth
Kolkata Metro was the first metro system in India. The idea started in the 1920s during British rule, but construction only began in the 1970s. The first underground metro route, from Bhawanipore to Esplanade, started working in 1984. Since then, the network has grown a lot. In 2020, the East-West Corridor also began service. Today, Kolkata Metro is the fifth-longest metro system in India.
At present, three metro lines are running in Kolkata. The Blue Line runs from Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash and covers 31.36 kilometres. The Green Line covers 6.9 kilometres between Salt Lake Sector V and Phoolbagan. The Purple Line operates between Joka and Taratala. More metro lines are under construction, including the Yellow Line, Pink Line, and the very important Orange Line.
Orange Line: A New Route to the Airport
The Orange Line, also known as Kolkata Metro Line 6, will run from New Garia in the south to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in the northeast. It will pass through busy areas like Salt Lake and New Town. This will help many people who travel daily in the city.
Right now, five stations on this line are ready and running. These include Kavi Subhash (New Garia), Satyajit Ray (Hiland Park), Jyotirindra Nandi (near Metro Cash & Carry, Ajoy Nagar), Kavi Sukanta (Abhishikta Crossing), and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby area).
Easy Ticketing and Affordable Fares
To make travel easier, a Single Ticket System is available for both the Blue Line and the Orange Line. This helps passengers travel more smoothly without changing tickets. The ticket prices on the Orange Line range from ₹20 to ₹45, depending on how far you travel.
For example, the fare from Dakshineswar or Dum Dum to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay is ₹45. From Esplanade, Chandni Chowk, Park Street, or Kalighat, the fare is ₹40. Travellers from Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) will pay ₹35. If you are going from Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, the fare is just ₹20.
The Orange Line is a big step forward for the city's transport system. It connects key areas and makes it easier for people to reach the airport. With this new line, Kolkata is showing its commitment to modern and faster public transport for everyone.
