In light of recent media reports about the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, the Karnataka Department of Health and Family Welfare has released a reassuring statement. As of now, Two cases of HMPV have been reported in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) has also confirmed that HMPV behaves like other common respiratory viruses, causing cold and flu-like symptoms, particularly during winter, and mostly affecting children and the elderly.

No Increase in Respiratory Infections in Karnataka
The health department conducted a detailed analysis of respiratory infections such as the common cold, influenza-like illness (ILI), and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) within the state. The findings revealed no significant increase in reported cases in December 2024 compared to the same period last year. This suggests that respiratory infections in the state remain stable, and there is no evidence to indicate an HMPV outbreak.
