Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced the financial plan for 2025-26, focusing on improving infrastructure and making travel easier for residents. The budget includes key projects like the expansion of Namma Metro and the introduction of the Shakti scheme, which allows women to travel for free on state-run buses. These efforts aim to reduce Bengaluru's traffic problems and promote equal access to public transport.

A total of Rs. 51,034 crore has been set aside for various guarantee schemes, showing the government's commitment to developing Karnataka's infrastructure. A major part of this is the expansion of the Namma Metro, which will add 98.6 km to the metro network in the next two years. This will help reduce congestion and improve connectivity, especially to important areas like Devanahalli, making travel to the airport much easier.
Free Travel for Women
One of the most impactful initiatives in the budget is the Shakti scheme, which has an allocation of Rs. 5,300 crore. This scheme offers free travel for women on state-run buses, encouraging them to participate more in the workforce and public activities by removing transportation costs as a barrier.
Improving Urban Travel
To further improve mobility in Bengaluru, the government has proposed the development of signal-free corridors along major roads. This will help vehicles move faster and reduce traffic jams. The government is also introducing the Chief Minister's Infrastructure Development Program (CMIDP), which has Rs. 8,000 crore allocated for projects like road construction, minor irrigation improvements, and urban infrastructure development across Karnataka.
Major Infrastructure Projects
Several large infrastructure projects have also been announced to transform Bengaluru's roads. A 40.5 km double-decker flyover will be built at a cost of Rs. 8,916 crore. Additionally, a new 300 km network of roads will be developed using canal buffer zones to create more travel routes. Another Rs. 660 crore will be used to upgrade 460 km of existing main roads. To further ease congestion, 120 km of flyovers and grade separators will be constructed at busy intersections.
The Karnataka budget for 2025-26 focuses on infrastructure growth and social inclusion. By expanding the metro system, introducing free bus travel for women, and investing in road development, the government aims to make travel smoother and more convenient for everyone. These projects will not only reduce Bengaluru's traffic problems but also create a well-connected and more accessible city for its residents.
