India's First High-Speed Train to Undergo Tests, Prototype to be Ready in Early 2027

BEML, the government-owned company building India's first indigenously developed high-speed train, expects the prototype to be ready in early 2027. This train, called B28, is being made at BEML's Aditya plant in Bengaluru, which was inaugurated in April 2026 by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Once the prototype is completed, it will be sent to the Surat depot for testing before it enters service.

India's First High-Speed Train to Undergo Tests

The train will first undergo detailed tests at the BEML factory, followed by further trials at Surat and then on the main Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail line. This full testing process is expected to take around four to six months. The Ministry of Railways wants the B28 train to be ready by March 2027, with commercial operations planned to begin in August 2027 on the Surat-Vapi section of the corridor.

The B28 name stands for Bharat-made Bullet and reflects its planned top speed of 280 km/h. BEML received the contract in October 2024 from Integral Coach Factory in Chennai to design and build two such trains.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is India's first bullet train project and one of its most ambitious railway modernization efforts. The 508-km line will pass through Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, connecting 12 stations, including Mumbai, Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati. The trains on this corridor are designed for a maximum speed of 350 km/h, with an operating speed of 320 km/h.

High-Speed Train Technological Features

The project uses Japanese Shinkansen technology, including ballastless tracks, advanced electrification, and modern safety systems. Around 90% of the route will run on viaducts, and it also includes India's first undersea railway tunnel under Thane Creek. Besides faster travel, the project is expected to create jobs, develop local railway manufacturing, and lay the foundation for more bullet train corridors across India in the future.
