IMD Warns of Extended Downpour Across Multiple States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm as a looming weather system in the Bay of Bengal threatens to unleash heavy rains across several Indian states. The IMD's warning extends until October 4, with a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal. This weather phenomenon is expected to bring substantial rainfall to regions including Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Kerala in the coming days.

Bay of Bengal Brewing Trouble
The source of concern is a low-pressure area projected to develop over the east-central and adjoining northeastern Bay of Bengal by Friday. This weather system is anticipated to track northwestwards, heading towards north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal. As it progresses, heavy to very heavy rainfall is on the horizon for Gangetic West Bengal from September 29 to 30, followed by Odisha from September 30 to October 2.
Warnings and Precautions
The IMD has issued specific warnings for certain areas. An orange warning (indicating preparedness) is in effect for heavy rainfall in districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, and Balasore in Odisha on Friday. Additionally, a yellow warning (signifying vigilance) pertains to thunderstorms with lightning in Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, and Koraput on Thursday.
Broad-Scale Impact
The IMD's predictions encompass a broader geographical reach. Light to isolated heavy rainfall is foreseen over Andaman & Nicobar Islands until October 1 and over Jharkhand and Bihar until October 4. Furthermore, Chhattisgarh is expected to experience light or moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall from September 30 to October 3.
Regional Rainfall Variations
Certain regions are set to receive concentrated bouts of rainfall. Isolated very heavy rainfall is highly probable over Konkan-Goa until September 30, and in Madhya Maharashtra on September 29, with a parallel forecast for Coastal Karnataka on September 29 and 30.

Safety Measures Advised
In response to the impending deluge, the IMD has advised residents in the affected states to take precautions and minimize outdoor activities during this period of heavy rainfall. The department has also raised concerns over possible waterlogging, flooding, landslides, and disruptions to transportation and communication in certain areas.
Monsoon Withdrawal
While India faces these rain-related challenges, the IMD has provided another piece of critical information. The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from northwest India is expected to commence from October 1.
Stay safe, stay dry, and keep an eye on the weather as these states prepare for an extended period of rainfall.
