IMD’s Red Alert In Uttarakhand: Heavy To Extremely Heavy Rainfall Expected

Uttarakhand's Garhwal region experiences early snowfall, with IMD issuing a red alert for heavy rainfall. Schools are closed as a precaution, and the Kedarnath trek route is affected.

Uttarakhand's Garhwal region saw early snowfall on Thursday, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state in the coming days. The IMD forecasted light to moderate rain till September 14, with some areas expected to experience heavy downpours.

Schools Closed as Precaution

In response to the alert, several districts, including Dehradun and Chamoli, have shut schools as a precautionary measure. Both Kumaon and Garhwal regions have been experiencing continuous rain since Thursday morning. Snowfall was reported at an altitude of 5,000 meters in Garhwal's high Himalayan areas.

The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority has issued directives to District Magistrates to take full precautions. They warned of potential waterlogging in plains and landslides in hilly regions. Specific areas like Chamoli, Dehradun, and Haridwar are likely to be severely impacted by the heavy rains on Thursday and Friday.

Kedarnath Trekking Route Affected

The Sonprayag-Gaurikund road on the Kedarnath trekking route has been closed due to torrential rains. Stranded pilgrims in Gaurikund will only be charged for one day's stay as hotel owners have agreed to waive additional fees, according to the Gaurikund Vyapar Mandal.

Residents and travelers are urged to stay cautious, especially in areas prone to landslides and flash floods. The administration remains on high alert, prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise due to the severe weather conditions.

The state is bracing for incoming weather challenges, with authorities emphasizing the need for vigilance. The IMD's warnings highlight the importance of taking necessary precautions during this period of intense rainfall and potential snowfall in higher altitudes.
