Bengaluru is currently grappling with scorching temperatures and Heatwave, but there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts rainfall in the second week of April, offering respite to its residents.

On Tuesday, April 2, the city recorded a blistering temperature of 37.6 degrees Celsius, marking the highest in the past eight years and the third highest in the last 15 years. A Prasad, a senior scientist with the IMD, Bengaluru, attributed the rise in temperatures to the El Nino effect. Last year, the El Nino effect saw an index exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius, but it has slightly decreased to 1.1 this year. During El Nino years, above-normal temperatures and reduced rainfall, especially over Peninsular India, are common.
Typically, Bengaluru experiences rainfall in the first week of April. However, this year, the rain has been delayed. Nevertheless, the city is anticipated to receive pre-monsoon showers, albeit with a reduced amount of precipitation. March 2024 witnessed exceptionally dry weather, with no rainfall recorded in Bengaluru. This absence of rain led to high temperatures, reaching 36.6 degrees Celsius on March 31st, the highest since 2019. The dry spell is expected to persist in North Inland and South Inland districts, with temperatures ranging between 35 to 36 degrees Celsius over the next two weeks. However, relief is in sight for Bengaluru, Hassan, and Tumkur districts as rainfall is on the forecast.
Residents of Karnataka, weary from the relentless heat, can look forward to relief as the weather department predicts rainfall across the state in the coming days. The anticipated break from the sweltering heat seems imminent, with promising predictions of rainfall. Rain clouds are expected to make an appearance in various districts, providing relief to residents battling high temperatures.

While the pre-monsoon showers will bring temporary relief with temperatures dropping by a few degrees Celsius, the respite will be short-lived. Bengaluru is expected to receive light rain in April, with a total of 61.7 mm predicted by the IMD. Despite the usual average temperature for the month being 34 degrees Celsius, the city has been consistently experiencing above-average temperatures since the beginning of April. Moreover, the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) recorded the highest maximum temperature of 38.3 degrees Celsius on Friday, April 5.
As Bengaluru eagerly awaits the much-needed rainfall, citizens are advised to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions to beat the heat. With relief on the horizon, residents can look forward to cooler days ahead.
