Guwahati Airport Leads Northeast with Facial Recognition Technology for Passengers
Guwahati, also known as Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first airport in the northeastern region of India to deploy facial recognition technology for its passengers. The innovative technology, referred to as Digi Yatra, was inaugurated on a Sunday by Assam's Industries and Commerce Minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary, and the Secretary of Civil Aviation, Rajiv Bansal.

Digi Yatra is a digital platform designed to facilitate contactless and smooth passenger movement through various checkpoints within airports. It harnesses facial recognition technology, seamlessly integrated with Aadhaar, India's biometric identification system. Passengers can register their documents using the Digi Yatra app and gain access to the airport by simply having their faces scanned. Once recognized by the camera, the gate automatically opens.
The service will be accessible in three key areas of the airport: the primary entrance, check-in counters, and boarding zones. This development is expected to reduce waiting times and the overall travel hassle for passengers while concurrently enhancing airport security and operational efficiency. Importantly, it will contribute to the mitigation of COVID-19 transmission risks by eliminating the need for physical contact and document exchanges.
Presently, the facility is accessible to passengers of Akasa and IndiGo airlines at Guwahati, with plans to extend the service to all other carriers by September. Furthermore, this innovation is set to be introduced at six additional airports across India, as part of the government's ambitious drive to encourage digital transformation and innovation within the civil aviation sector.

Guwahati Airport, serving as the largest and busiest airport in the northeastern region, witnessed approximately five lakh passengers in June this year. The airport is managed by Adani Airports, a subsidiary of the Adani Group, which also oversees operations at five other airports throughout India. The airport has undergone several developmental projects aimed at enhancing its infrastructure and services.
The introduction of Digi Yatra at Guwahati Airport marks a significant milestone in the civil aviation sector of the northeastern region. It reflects India's commitment to embracing technological advancements to ensure passenger convenience and safety. Additionally, it highlights the cultural and historical connections shared between India and France, emphasizing the cooperative efforts that have evolved between the two nations over time.
This initiative is anticipated to attract a more extensive range of visitors, both domestically and internationally. This initiative offers a distinctive opportunity for individuals to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of Indian and French cultural diversity and unity. It is also an occasion to celebrate the enduring friendship and collaboration that have evolved between these two nations over the years.
To register for the facility, travelers have two convenient options:
1. Download the Digi Yatra app by the Digi Yatra Foundation from the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS). Complete registration using your mobile number and OTP. Link your identity credentials using DigiLocker or Offline Aadhaar. Capture and upload a selfie onto the app. Subsequently, update your boarding pass via the app and share it with the departure airport.
2. Register at the Super Fast Digi Yatra kiosk situated within the airport. Scan your boarding pass, complete facial registration, and finalize the process at the CISF manned desk. Present your government-approved ID proof for verification by CISF personnel.
Once registered, travelers can seamlessly utilize the Digi Yatra facility at the entrance gate, during security checks, and at the boarding gate of the airport. This streamlined process promises to make travel faster, more convenient, and safer for all passengers.
