The Gangotri Park administration has halted access to Gomukh due to extensive road damage caused by continuous rain. Notice boards have been placed at Gangotri Dham and Kankhu Barrier, informing visitors of the closure. This decision affects not only devotees but also Kanwariyas who collect Ganga water during the Kanwar Yatra in Sawan.
Impact on Local Traders
Local traders from Gangotri Dham have voiced their dissatisfaction with the ban. Satendra Semwal and Deepak Rana noted that while culverts have been washed away by rain before, the route to Gomukh has never been completely blocked during the Kanwar Yatra. They accused the park administration of intentionally delaying culvert repairs.
Recent rains have caused significant flooding in Devgad, Chidbasa, and Bhojgaddi drains within Gangotri National Park. This led to a culvert being washed away, along with two Kanwariyas from Delhi. Fortunately, the State Disaster Response Force managed to rescue 38 other individuals trapped in the area.
Park Administration's Response
When questioned about the traders' allegations, RN Pandey, Deputy Director of Gangotri National Park, explained that labourers are stationed in Chidbassa. However, construction work cannot proceed until water levels in the drains decrease.
The park administration's decision to close the route is aimed at ensuring safety for all visitors. The continuous rain has made it unsafe for travel, necessitating immediate action to prevent further incidents.
