The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the early onset of the southwest monsoon, bringing much-needed showers to various parts of India. This early arrival has affected regions including Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and even as far as West Bengal ahead of its expected schedule.

Heavy Rainfall in Kerala
Kerala has experienced significant rainfall due to the early monsoon. The IMD has issued various weather alerts for the state. Districts like Ernakulam are under an orange alert, indicating very heavy rainfall. Other districts such as Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, and Wayanad are under a yellow alert, warning residents of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Impact on Karnataka
In Karnataka, the monsoon arrived two days earlier than predicted, causing widespread rainfall and thunderstorms. This led to disruptions in local infrastructure, including service interruptions at Bengaluru's Trinity Metro Station. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the state, expecting light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms to continue through Thursday.
Monsoon in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh also felt the early impact of the monsoon, with heavy rainfall on Sunday evening. The weather department forecasts that the monsoon will cover the entire state within the next week, predicting above-normal rainfall for the region.

Weather Alerts in Delhi
Meanwhile, Delhi is bracing for a heatwave with possible evening thunderstorms in the coming days. The IMD has declared a yellow alert for the next three days, warning of high temperatures during the day but with potential relief from thunderstorms and light rain by night. This brief respite is much anticipated amid the otherwise scorching period.
Northern Regions Expecting Rain
Further north, regions such as Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are likely to see light rains, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next five days. These weather patterns are due to Western Disturbances and cyclonic circulations affecting the area.
Monsoon Reaches West Bengal
In West Bengal, the northern parts of the state have welcomed the monsoon. The IMD predicts that the wet weather will continue until June 6, bringing relief to the region.
Maharashtra on Watch
Maharashtra is also preparing for the monsoon, expecting it to arrive within three to four days. Pune might see some pre-monsoon showers, which are likely to cool down the city's temperatures until June 7.
The early arrival of the southwest monsoon has brought significant weather changes across various parts of India. From heavy rains in Kerala and Karnataka to expected heatwaves in Delhi, the country's weather patterns are undergoing notable shifts. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather alerts from the IMD and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
