Don’t Plan Trips! Karnataka Warned of Heavy Rain and Potential Flooding

Karnataka is expected to experience very heavy rainfall until July 16, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). The rain is predicted to be so intense that officials have issued several warnings and advisories to the public.

Red Alert Issued in Karnataka

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a 'red alert' for parts of Karnataka, indicating that these areas will receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, with over 20 cm of rain expected in just 24 hours. In response to this warning, the deputy commissioner of Uttara Kannada district, Laxmipriya, has declared a holiday for all schools and PU colleges in several taluks. These taluks include Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Dandeli, and Joida on Monday.

The heavy rain has already started affecting the region. On Sunday, Castle Rock in Uttara Kannada received the highest rainfall, with 220 mm recorded. The IMD has warned that heavy rain will continue in Uttara Kannada from 1 pm on July 14 to 8.30 pm on July 16.

The current heavy monsoon conditions are due to an off-shore trough along the Maharashtra-north Kerala coast and a cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal near coastal Andhra Pradesh. These weather systems are bringing more moisture into Karnataka, leading to the expected heavy rainfall. The rains will likely affect coastal Karnataka, Malnad districts, and parts of interior Karnataka until July 16.

Weather experts have also predicted that dams in the Kaveri and Krishna basins in Karnataka will receive significant inflows of water due to the heavy rain. The Central Water Commission has issued an inflow forecast for six dams and barrages in Karnataka, warning that inflows may exceed the specified threshold limits. The Kabini reservoir is already on red alert, with its storage levels rising above 85%. Authorities are monitoring water levels closely and will regulate the dams to prevent downstream flooding and upstream submergence when necessary.

On July 15, extremely heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over districts in Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. From July 16-18, heavy to very heavy rain is expected at isolated places in Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka, and from July 15 in North Interior Karnataka. Additionally, scattered heavy to very heavy rain, with isolated extremely heavy rain and sustained wind speeds reaching 40-50 km/h, is expected over Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi districts on July 15.

Given these conditions, residents and travelers are advised to avoid planning trips to the affected areas. The continuous rain poses a risk of flooding and landslides, making travel unsafe. The authorities are taking all necessary measures to ensure public safety and minimize damage from the heavy rains.

People living in the affected areas should stay informed about weather updates and follow the instructions from local authorities. It is essential to stay indoors during heavy rainfall and avoid crossing flooded areas to ensure safety.

Karnataka is bracing for vigorous rainfall until July 16. The heavy rain is expected to cause significant impacts, including potential flooding and disruptions to daily life. Residents and travelers should take all necessary precautions and avoid any non-essential travel to the affected regions during this period.
