Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the newly completed Mattancherry and Willingdon Island terminals of the Kochi Water Metro at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The event will take place at the Mattancherry terminal and will be presided over by Industries Minister P. Rajeeve. Several dignitaries, including Mayor M. Anilkumar,

Deputy Mayor K.A. Ansia, Member of Parliament Hibi Eden, MLAs K.J. Maxi and T.J. Vinod, and Kochi Corporation councillor T. Padmakumari, will attend and address the function.
Two New Terminals Reflect Kerala's Heritage
Built at a total cost of ₹38 crore, the two new terminals will increase the number of operational Water Metro terminals to 12. The Mattancherry terminal, which covers an area of 8,000 sq. ft., is near the famous Dutch Palace, a heritage site. It has been designed to match the traditional architecture and cultural charm of the area, reflecting the spirit of old Kochi. The Willingdon Island terminal, spread across 3,000 sq. ft. near the old ferry jetty, also reflects the maritime heritage of the region. During construction, special care was taken to preserve existing trees and greenery, ensuring the project had minimal environmental impacts, according to an official press release.
Benefits for Commuters
The addition of these two terminals is expected to improve connectivity and transportation for residents and tourists. It will also help boost trade, business opportunities, and tourism in the historic Mattancherry area and the port-linked Willingdon Island. With the expansion of the Kochi Water Metro network, the city is closer to its goal of offering an eco-friendly, efficient, and modern public transport system that connects various islands and mainland parts of Kochi more smoothly.
