Delhi's Makeover: Highways, Smart Tunnels, and New Link to Katra & Dehradun Approved

Delhi is all set to see major improvements in its roads and transport systems. The central government has approved Rs 24,000 crore for new road and tunnel projects in the national capital. These projects are expected to reduce traffic jams, improve travel times, and strengthen connections with nearby cities.

High-Level Meeting Held in Delhi

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting led by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, MCD Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, and senior officials were also present.

During the meeting, current and future road plans were discussed in detail. Nitin Gadkari shared that the central government is already working on projects worth Rs 34,000 crore in Delhi. These include building new flyovers, widening highways, and creating roads without traffic signals to make travel smoother and faster.

New Projects to Improve Travel

Several new road and tunnel projects have now been approved. One of the key projects is a 7-kilometre underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road. An elevated road will also be built from INA towards Faridabad and Gurugram.

Other important projects include a new highway connecting Delhi to Katra and Amritsar, and a corridor from Delhi to Dehradun via Alipur and Tronica City. New plans will also help people travel from Noida and Haryana to Dehradun without passing through central Delhi. The Rohtak Road may be taken over by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and turned into a signal-free corridor.

Focus on Water Management and Sustainability

To avoid future waterlogging, Nitin Gadkari has directed the NHAI to manage drainage and water systems properly during construction. Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) will support these efforts. Also, NHAI will continue using solid waste from Delhi in road building, which helps in reducing the city's garbage problem.

Bridges to Reduce Traffic Jams

An extra Rs 150 crore has been set aside to build Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Rail Under Bridges (RUBs) at busy railway crossings. This will help ease traffic congestion in key areas.

Delhi CM Thanks the Centre

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nitin Gadkari for their support. She shared that Delhi has now received infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 1.25 lakh crore from the central government, showing a strong commitment to the city's growth and better roads.
