The Congress party has proposed to rename a metro station in Kolkata in honour of Barkat Gani Khan Chowdhury, a former Railway Minister of India. The party believes this step would be a fitting tribute to his important work for the Indian Railways and especially for Kolkata's metro development.

A request to Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation
Congress leaders have written a formal request to the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) to consider this change. The letter was submitted by Sarwar Jahan, the Youth Congress President of Malda district. In his letter, Jahan explained that Kolkata was the first Indian city to get a metro system, and Gani Khan Chowdhury had played a big part in making that happen during the 1980s.
Despite his strong contributions to the metro project and other railway developments, not a single metro station in Kolkata has been named after him yet. Congress leaders feel this should now be corrected.
Suggested stations for renaming
In the letter, the Congress party suggested renaming one of the major metro stations such as Esplanade, Park Street, or Sealdah after Gani Khan Chowdhury. They also mentioned that a newly built metro station could be chosen for this honor if needed.
The proposal aims to recognize Chowdhury's work in improving transportation across the country. His efforts helped shape India's railway network, and his support for Kolkata's metro project is still remembered.
Support from local Congress MP
Ishak Khan Chowdhury, a Congress MP from Malda South, is also supporting this move. He has announced that he plans to speak directly to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw about this matter in the coming days. The Congress party hopes that the central government will agree to this proposal.
A step to remember and inspire
Congress leaders say this move is not only about renaming a station, but also about keeping Gani Khan Chowdhury's memory alive for future generations. They want people, especially the youth, to know more about his role in building India's first metro system and improving public transport in the country.
By renaming a metro station in his name, the Congress party hopes to celebrate his legacy and encourage more people to learn about India's railway history and the leaders who made it better.
