Chennai Metro Rail Limited Unveils Plans for New 500-Vehicle Parking Facility at OTA–Nanganallur Road Station

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to build a large parking area for commuters using the OTA-Nanganallur Road Metro station. The new facility will come up on land where a well-known restaurant once stood. The restaurant was recently demolished after a long legal dispute.

Additional Details of Chennai Metro's Parking Area

The land originally belonged to the State government and had been leased to the restaurant. However, after the lease expired, the restaurant management refused to vacate the premises. Following a ruling by the Alandur Judicial Court in favour of the government, the Chengalpattu district administration took action and cleared the structure. Afterward, the government handed over the 40,000 sq. ft. land to CMRL. Metro officials said this area would soon be converted into a large parking facility that can hold nearly 500 vehicles. Work will include clearing the site, paving, marking parking spots, and building ramps and pathways. Once completed, commuters will be able to walk to the station in about five to ten minutes from the parking lot. Officials explained that there is growing demand for parking at the OTA-Nanganallur Road station, as many people use two-wheelers to reach the Metro due to limited last-mile connectivity options. The number of commuters is expected to increase once the parking lot becomes operational.

Commuters' Opinions

Srivatson, a regular commuter from Nanganallur, said the project will be a great relief for passengers. Currently, the station has only one entry and exit point, forcing people to take a U-turn before parking. CMRL also plans to build a second entry/exit to improve access.

He added that a dedicated walkway between the new parking area and the station would make the commute more convenient. "This new parking space will be very useful and reduce congestion around the station," he said.
