Chennai has added 130 new electric buses to its public transport system as the second phase of the city's electric bus programme gets underway, introduced by OHM Global Mobility for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). The buses were officially flagged off at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in the presence of government transport officials and representatives of OHM Global Mobility.
Chennai's New Electric Buses
The 130 buses are the first group of a larger deployment planned under Phase 2. OHM will supply and operate a total of 500 electric buses as part of this phase, manufactured by Switch, the electric vehicle division of Ashok Leyland.
How will Chennai's Electric Buses Benefit Passengers?
The latest addition is expected to help Chennai expand its clean and environmentally friendly public transport network. These new buses are air-conditioned and fully electric, which means they do not produce tailpipe emissions while operating. They are also expected to provide passengers with a quieter, more comfortable travel experience compared with conventional diesel buses.
OHM Global Mobility is building on its experience from the first phase of Chennai's electric bus programme. According to the company, its electric buses have already travelled more than 3 crore green kilometres. The depots operated during the first phase also achieved more than 99% schedule adherence, showing reliable bus operations.
OHM said the launch of the first 130 buses is an important step in Chennai's move towards cleaner public transportation. The company will continue to support the programme as more buses are introduced across the city.
Apart from operating the buses, OHM will use its expertise in electric mobility, fleet management and maintenance to manage the expanded fleet. Its Mobility-as-a-Service capabilities will also support the growth of Chennai's electric public transport system.
With the remaining buses expected to be deployed in the coming stages, the programme could help Chennai reduce dependence on conventional fuel-powered buses and move towards a cleaner and more sustainable urban transport network.
