The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Thiruvananthapuram Metro has suggested the development of major intermodal transport hubs at Pappanamcode and Anayara. The plan aims to connect different modes of transport and make daily travel easier for passengers. The DPR has been prepared with technical support from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and submitted by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) to the Kerala government.
Thiruvananthapuram Metro Project
The first phase of the Metro is planned between Pappanamcode and Enchakkal. The 31-km corridor will have 27 stations and is estimated to cost around Rs 8,000 crore. The route will pass through important locations such as Karamana, Thampanoor, Secretariat, Palayam, Medical College, Ulloor, Sreekaryam, Kazhakkoottam, Technopark, Akkulam, Kochuveli, the airport and Enchakkal.
Pappanamcode is proposed as an important intermodal hub at the southern end of the corridor. It will have large parking facilities where people from areas such as Neyyattinkara, Balaramapuram and Parassala can park their vehicles and continue their journey by Metro. This park-and-ride facility is expected to reduce the number of private vehicles entering the city.
The larger multimodal hub is proposed at Anayara. Its location near NH 66, Kochuveli railway station, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and the Parvathy Puthanar waterway makes it suitable for connecting Metro, road, rail, air and potentially water transport. The plan also leaves room for future water-based transport services.
The DPR proposes a 20-acre Metro yard and maintenance facility at Kazhakkoottam. It will support Metro operations and is located close to Technopark.
The Metro will be fully elevated under the current proposal. Stations are planned with lifts, escalators, and better parking facilities. The project also aims to improve passenger convenience and reduce traffic disruption during construction.
