The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the third phase of the Kochi Metro to the Kerala government, which will connect Aluva with Angamaly through Kariyad and the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery. The planned route is around 17.5 km long and is expected to improve public transport connectivity in northern parts of Ernakulam district.
Kochi Metro Phase III Project: Submission of DPR
One of the project's most important features is direct Metro connectivity to Cochin International Airport. The DPR proposes a 3-km underground section leading towards the airport, making it easier for passengers to travel between the city, airport, and other major transport points.
The project is also expected to improve connections between different modes of transport, including Metro, road, rail, and air. Thousands of people from Angamaly and nearby areas travel regularly towards Aluva and Ernakulam for work and other purposes. The new Metro corridor could provide them with a faster and more convenient alternative to buses and other road transport.
The DPR was prepared after a detailed study of the proposed alignment, technical requirements, land availability, stations and project costs. The study process began last year, and the final report has now been submitted to the state government.
The Kerala government will examine the DPR before forwarding it to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for further approval. The project's progress will depend on the approvals and funding arrangements decided by the state and central governments.
The Phase 3 extension is expected to support development around Aluva, Nedumbassery and Angamaly. With the airport included in the proposed route, the project could significantly improve regional connectivity and make public transport more convenient for both daily commuters and air travellers.
