Bengaluru's much-awaited Pink Line Metro extension may finally open in September 2026. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is preparing to start operations on the 7-km elevated stretch between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. However, while the Metro infrastructure is nearing completion, commuters may still face major problems reaching the stations.
Bengaluru Metro Pink Line: Challenges to be Faced by Passengers
The biggest concern is poor last-mile connectivity, especially along Bannerghatta Road. Several areas around the upcoming stations have no proper footpaths. In some places, existing footpaths are blocked by garbage, mud or other obstacles. Open drains and potholes also make walking unsafe. As a result, many residents may have to walk along busy roads to reach the Metro stations.
Around Kalena Agrahara station, the road towards NICE Road is reportedly in poor condition. Parts of the footpath are either missing or unusable. A temporary bus stop has also been set up close to an open drain. Similar problems have been reported near the Royal Meenakshi Mall junction, where Metro-related infrastructure and garbage have reduced the space available for pedestrians.
The situation around Hulimavu station is also a concern. Although buses stop near the station, there is no proper shelter for passengers. Nearby residential areas such as Hulimavu Main Road, BDA 80 Feet Road and Arekere Road also lack convenient pedestrian links to the station.
Residents Concern
Residents have also raised concerns about the naming of the IIMB station and the uneven distance between some stations. They have urged authorities to improve roads and footpaths before opening the Metro.
However, the Pink Line will create a new interchange at Jayadeva Hospital with the Yellow Line, making travel towards Electronic City and other parts of Bengaluru easier. Parking facilities have also been provided at four stations, with space for 575 two-wheelers.
