The first operational stretch of Chennai Metro Phase 2 is ready and has already received the required safety approvals, but passenger services have still not started. The delay has left many commuters wondering why trains are not running despite the project being technically cleared. The stretch in question is the 14.6-km corridor between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani, which is part of the larger Phase 2 metro network.

Chennai Metro's Phase 2 Opening Delayed
Earlier this year, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) approved operations on the route after conducting inspections and trial runs. However, the approval came with certain conditions. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) was asked to complete some remaining work, particularly on the double-decker viaduct section shared by Corridors 4 and 5, which has caused the opening to be postponed several times.

The corridor has 17 stations, but only a limited number of stations were initially planned to open. Some station works, access facilities, and passenger amenities were still under progress even after the safety clearance was received. Officials wanted to ensure that the infrastructure was fully ready before allowing public operations.
Another challenge is the integration of the new Phase 2 stations with the existing Phase 1 network. At Vadapalani, passengers will need to use a skywalk and move across multiple levels to change trains. Some access arrangements and station facilities are still being completed to improve passenger convenience and safety.
Delay of Poonamallee-Vadapalani Corridor Causing Frustration Among Residents
The delay has caused frustration among residents, especially those travelling through Porur, Poonamallee, and Vadapalani, who were expecting metro services to begin months ago. Many commuters feel the line is ready and should be opened soon. Discussions among residents and metro enthusiasts suggest that people are eagerly waiting for an official inauguration date.
How will this Line Benefit Passengers?
Once operational, the Poonamallee-Vadapalani corridor will become Chennai Metro's first Phase 2 section to open for public use. The line is expected to reduce travel time, ease road congestion, and improve connectivity across western Chennai. Authorities are now expected to announce the launch date after completing the remaining works and obtaining final clearances for commercial operations.
