Chennai’s Metro Corridor to Boost Connectivity in Western Suburbs with 3 Flyovers by 2030

A 22-km metro corridor with three flyovers and a multi-modal hub in Avadi is set to transform commuters' lives in Chennai's western suburbs. Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) is planning to extend the line from Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Ambattur and Avadi by 2030, providing faster connections to the city.

The project will also be integrated with the long-delayed Chennai-Tiruttani Highway (CTH) expansion. However, state approval has been granted; central clearance is still awaited.

3 Flyovers Construction to Merge with Chennai Metro

The Chief Engineer of State Highways, S Jawahar Muthuraj, announced that the three flyovers at Ambattur Estate to Telephone Exchange, Dunlop to Ambattur station, and Murugappa Polytechnic to KC Hospital are being built alongside the metro as they fall along the same stretch. He also added that common pillars will support both the flyovers and the metro viaduct. Moreover, land acquisition for the work is in progress.

Chennai Metro Corridor to Benefit Chennai Residents

The suburban trains are the means of transportation for western suburban residents beyond Avadi, including Tiruttani and Tiruvallur, who rely on suburban trains to reach Chennai Central or Chennai Beach and then switch to buses or the metro. Once the new line opens, they will have direct access to the airport, Central, and Egmore stations through the metro via Koyambedu.

CMRL will seek a separate tender for shifting underground utilities, water pipelines, and cables to avoid construction delays. The project director of CMRL, T. Archunan, stated that such delays had slowed progress in the earlier project of Corridor 5 of Phase II near Kaliamman temple, in Virugambakkam, and this time the utility work will be done first.

Avadi is planned as a major transit hub, linking suburban trains, MTC buses, and metro services. Residents and experts, including Sivasubramaniam Jayaraman, the Deputy Director of ITDP India, welcomed the project but emphasized the need for proper station planning, surveys, and better last-mile connectivity to make the new corridor effective.
