Bangalore's Namma Metro Delays Phase 3 Construction to June 2026 Amid Environmental Concerns and Tree Loss

Namma Metro has shifted the Phase 3 construction plan to June 2026, instead of the earlier plan of January, as the pre-construction work, including land acquisition, utility shifting, and land clearance, is delaying the process. end on September 17, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced that operations will start by May 2031, and the 44.65-km phase will expand the metro network to 222.2 km.

Namma Metro Phase 3 Construction Leading to Loss of Trees

A senior BMRCL official stated that tree-cutting approvals may be ready by mid-2026, and the number of trees to be cut for Phase 3 has been reduced from 11,137 to around 6,700. Permissions have already been received to cut or shift about 1,100 trees along Corridor 1 (JP Nagar 4th Phase to Mysuru Road, 10.88 km). Although the work has started, tree surveys for the next two packages, Mysuru Road to Kanteerava Studio, 10.6 km, and Kanteerava Studio to Kempapura, 10.67 km, are still ongoing. After this survey, an expert committee will review the need and issue approvals. Moreover, BMRCL has promised to plant 10 native trees for every tree removed within city limits.

Initiatives by BMRCL to Combat Environmental Loss

As the approvals usually come step by step, depending on the pace of the groundwork, it takes time. The environmental study of Phase 3 notes that tree loss, dust from construction, and diesel emissions may worsen air quality in several parts of Bengaluru. Moreover, BMRCL has proposed an environmental monitoring plan costing Rs 43.53 crore to reduce the environmental impact. Meanwhile, environment activist Dattatraya T Devare said the Detailed Project Report (DPR) should be revised since the state approved a Rs 9,700-crore double-decker plan with long flyovers. He urged BMRCL to postpone public consultations until the revised DPR is shared.
