Karnataka Government Unveils Controversial Metro Line Project from Bengaluru to Tumakuru Amid Criticism

The Karnataka government's idea to build a metro line from Madavara in Bengaluru to Tumakuru has drawn criticism from citizens and experts, as it seems impractical. They argue that a suburban rail or regional rapid transit system would be an affordable and sustainable choice for inter-district travel.

BMRCL to Prepare a DPR

On September 29, Home Minister G. Parameshwara announced that the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) would handle the project. A feasibility study costing ₹3 crore was given to Hyderabad-based Aarvee Associates, with the report acceptance by the State. BMRCL has now been issued a Detailed Project Report (DPR) under a public-private partnership model.

Citizens' Questions Regarding Its Practicality

Dr. Parameshwara said that the first phase of the metro line could cost about ₹20,649 crore. However, many citizens and transport experts are questioning whether such a huge investment is practical. They argue that Bengaluru still lacks proper metro connectivity in key areas, including Outer Ring Road, Varthur, and Old Airport Road. So why build a 70-km metro outside the city when basic city routes are still incomplete? Commuters also stated that a metro covering 70 km would take nearly two hours to travel. In comparison, a suburban train or Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) could cover the same distance in just 30 to 40 minutes at a much lower cost. Some people believe the project is more about real estate development than solving transportation issues.

Citizens' Demands for Metro Extension on Other Routes

Citizens' groups say proposals to extend the metro to places like Hosur, Bidadi, and now Tumakuru keep coming up without proper planning. They insist that metro systems are meant for short urban routes, not long intercity stretches. They suggest improving the existing suburban railway, which already connects Bengaluru and Tumakuru in just over an hour for a very low fare. However, some Tumakuru residents support the idea, saying the metro would offer a more reliable and traffic-free travel option, even if it is slower.
