    Narasimhaswamy Temple

    The Narasimhaswamy Temple in Nellore is located about 13 km away from the heart of the city of Nellore. Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity in this temple. Narasimha, His fourth incarnation or “avatar” is worshipped in this temple.

    The temple is also known as Sri Vedagiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple. The temple is a famous spot of pilgrimage. Many myths surround the temple. Inside the temple there is the Santhana Vriksha, a tree believed to bless the childless with children. As a reason couples who do not have children come to the temple to offer their prayers.

    The Kondi Kasuli Hundi, where people come to offer their prayers, is believed to rid the diseased of the venomous bites of snakes and scorpions. There is a smaller, separate shrine located above the main temple that is dedicated to the worship of Adi Lakshmi. It is highly recommended to visit the temple once you are at Nellore.

  • 02Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

    Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is located at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. It is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu as Lord Ranganatha. The temple is also known as Talpagiri Ranganathaswami temple and Ranganayakulu. It is believed to have been constructed sometime in the 12th century A.D. It is located on the banks of the famous Penna river.

    A lot of legends surround the place. According to folklore, Sage Kashyapa had performed the Poundarika Yagga at this very site. The Lord blessed the Sage after being appeased by his offerings.

    The temple architecture is reminiscent of the styles of the Pallava style of temple architecture. The Gaaligopuram is an important feature that immediately catches the eye of the tourist. Gaaligopuram literally translates to “wind tower”.

    It is 70 ft in height and is noted for the 10 gold-plated vessels that are placed on top of it, known as Kalisams. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of the most important landmarks of Nellore. It is easily approachable once you have reached Nellore.

    Ramalingeswara Temple

    The Ramalingeswara Temple is located 30 km away from the city of Nellore. It is also known as Ramathirdham. The temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Kamakshamma.

    While Lord Shiva and Goddess Kamakshamma are the presiding deities in the temple, Lord Vigneswara and Lord Subhramanya are also worshipped in this very temple. The temple predates the rule of the British and is a marvel of ancient architecture. It is a must visit once at Nellore. It is easily approachable from Nellore and can be approached through the state highway.

    Mypadu Beach is located some 22 km away from Nellore. The road that leads to Mypadu is well maintained. It is easily approachable from Nellore. The beach front is lengthy, and not many resorts or hotels are found here. The beach is calm and is open only till 6 in the evening every day. The sunrise at the beach is something that should not be missed.

    There are buses that ply from Nellore to Mypadu at all times of the day. The beach almost imparts a surreal vibe to the visitor, with its slow waves and wind. The beach does not have heavy activity as far as visitors, or the sea is concerned. This is a place that has to be visited to feel the full experience of being in Nellore.

    Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary

    Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary is located some 20 km away from Pulicat Lake along the East Coast in the Nellore District. It is easily approachable from the city of Nellore and also from Chennai, which lies only 50 km away from the bird sanctuary. This sanctuary is famous as the breeding ground for several rare species of birds.

    Some endangered bird species that thrive inside this bird sanctuary are the little cormorant, painted stork, white-ibis and spotted billed pelican.

    The best season to visit Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary is between the months of October and March which is one of the best seasons for bird watching. The foreshore areas are the best spots to check out rare species of birds as it is here that most of them come to nest.

  • 06Pulicat Lake

    Pulicat Lake is spread over an expanse of 350 sq km which is famous for attracting several rare species of migratory birds. It is the second largest saltwater lagoon after the Chilka Lake in Orissa. It is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a stretch of land known as Sriharikota Island.

    Pulicat Lake is a good option as a picnic spot for tourists, as the area is generally calm and serene, surrounded by the ambience of the lake and the large numbers of migratory birds. The lake is also a destination of choice for birdwatchers as several rare species of migratory birds come to the lake during most times of the year.

    It is possible to go on a boat trip in the lake. The best bet is to rent a boat from one of the fishermen for as little as 500 Rupees for a boat and go on a boat trip in the lake. Some of the notable species of birds that can be found here are waterfowl, pelicans, herons and flamingos.

    Barah Shaheed Dargah is a famous mausoleum which is located in Sulurpet, Nellore District. It was erected in memory of 12 great martyrs or Shaheeds. It is believed that every wish of the devotee who comes to pay his respects here will be fulfilled.

    Moharram is a very important time of the year in this Dargah. Every year, during the time of Moharram, a three-day festival known as the Rottela Panduga is observed here at the Dargah. The Barah Shaheed Dargah is located very close to the sea. It is only 5 km away from the seashore. It is advisable to visit and stay overnight at the Dargah during the period of Amavasya.

    The Addala Mandapam is located inside the Ranganathaswamy temple in Nellore. It is famous for its detailed inlay work in stone and is indeed a sight to behold. Addala Mandapam, or “minor hall” is famous for the various mirrors that are installed inside it. They still cast an impeccable reflection centuries after being installed here in the hall.

    Somasila is located around 75 km away from Nellore along the route from Athrupalli to Podalakur. The road to Somasila is well-maintained for the most part.
