Sri Subramanya Swami Temple is one of the most eminent temples of Kannur and is located at Payyannur. Legend has it that the temple was consecrated by Lord Parasurama, one of the ten incarnations of Vishnu. The temple is rich with a long tradition of myths and some believe that it has gained mention in the Hindu epic of Brahmanda Purana.
Sri Subramanya Swami Temple has a unique style of architecture that charms visitors and devotees alike. The temple has a compound wall with a height of 12 ft built in a rare architectural style. The entire temple and its complex are spread over an area of 3 acres. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is double storied and is built in a shape that resembles the back of an elephant.
Another feature that makes this temple a stand-out is the absence of a sacred flag, a common feature of all south Indian temples. This temple has a little wonder in store for the visitors and the front yard of the temple has an Ilanji tree which flowers in all seasons, yet never bears fruits.
