Oorpazhassi Kavu Temple, an eminent religious spot and popular worship place, is located a few kilometres away from Kannur town at Edakkad. The inner courtyard of the temple contains three major deities namely Bhagavathy, Sree Oorpazhachi Daivathar and Vettakkorumakan (also known as Kiratha Sunu). The temple is a rare exception as it has Shaiva, Vaishnava and Shaktheya sanctums enshrined within the same complex.
Apart from the major shrines, there is a sub shrine dedicated to Thondachan where devotees make offerings of areca nut, beetle leaves and dried rice. The present temple structure was renovated in the mid nineteenth century in traditional architectural style.
The major festivals and rituals of the temple include Mandala Vilakku (observed for 41 days in the months of November and December), Shivarathri Mahotsavam, Pattathanam, Vellattom and Kaliyattom (ritualistic dance performances). Vettakkorumakan Paattu, a ritual singing performed to appease Lord Vettakkorumakan, is a major attraction of Oorpazhassi Kavu Temple.
