Eight Stations in the Metro Project

The eight stations proposed for construction in this phase are Manpada, Dongripada, Vijay Nagri, Waghbil, Waterfront, Patlipada, Thane Junction, and New Thane. Among these, Thane Junction and New Thane will be underground stations, while the remaining six stations will be elevated structures. MahaMetro estimates that constructing the two underground stations will cost about ₹223.70 crore, while the six elevated stations will cost around ₹228.44 crore. This brings the total estimated cost for these eight stations to ₹452.14 crore. However, the final cost may change depending on the bids received and how the work progresses.

Construction of the Underground Station

According to the bid documents, construction of the underground stations is expected to be completed within five years, while the elevated stations are planned to be finished in about 2.5 years. Actual construction work is likely to begin after the monsoon season.

Thane Ring Metro Project

Funding for the Thane Ring Metro project will come from both the central and Maharashtra state governments. Additional financial support will also be taken from international development banks and bilateral funding agencies. The metro corridor is now expected to become partially operational by 2029, which is later than the earlier target of 2025.

How Will this Project Help?

Once completed, the Thane Ring Metro will function as an important local transport system within Thane city. It will also connect with Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A between Gaimukh and Wadala, as well as Metro Line 5 towards Bhiwandi. The project report estimates that daily passenger numbers will reach about 6.47 lakh by 2029 and are expected to increase steadily in the following years, helping ease traffic in busy and fast-growing areas of Thane.
