As a part of a planned shift to the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), in line with central government guidelines, Chennai Metro Rail Limited has announced that it will stop using its existing travel cards from May 1. The aim is to make travel easier by allowing people to use

a single card across different public transport systems in the country.
Chennai Metro's New Initiative
To support this change, Chennai Metro is encouraging passengers to switch to the "Singara Chennai Card." This card, introduced in April 2023, is Chennai's version of the NCMC, designed to make payments more convenient by working across multiple services, such as metro travel and parking facilities.
What do the Passengers Need to Do?
Passengers who still have money left in their old travel cards will need to transfer the balance. They can do this by moving the amount to a QR-based Stored Value Pass using the CMRL mobile app or by shifting it to the new NCMC card. This ensures that users do not lose any unused balance during the transition.
How will this Initiative Help?
This move is part of a larger effort by the Union government to improve public transport systems across India and create a smooth & unified travel experience, where passengers can use a single card for different modes of transport without any hassle.
For Chennai, this change is expected to make ticketing simpler and more efficient. In the future, it may also help connect metro services with buses and other transport networks, making daily travel more convenient for commuters across the city.
