The expansion of Salem Airport in Tamil Nadu has become a critical topic of discussion in the Lok Sabha. During a session on November 28, 2024, Minister of Civil Aviation Shri Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu provided detailed insights into the plans and challenges for this ambitious project. The development aims to boost connectivity and economic growth in the region.

Current State of Salem Airport
Salem Airport is currently operational for daytime flights under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). It can handle ATR-72 type aircraft, a smaller plane commonly used for regional routes. However, to accommodate larger aircraft and improve its operational capabilities, the airport needs significant upgrades.
Expansion Plans
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has proposed a major expansion for Salem Airport.
- Land Requirement: A total of 460 acres is needed for this project, divided into three phases. For the first phase, 177 acres are required to enable Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations for ATR-72 aircraft.
- Runway Extension: Plans include extending the runway to 3,200 meters to accommodate larger aircraft, such as the Airbus A-321.
Challenges to Development
The project's progress largely depends on land acquisition, which is the responsibility of the Tamil Nadu State Government under the National Civil Aviation Policy, 2016. The government must provide land free of cost and free from encumbrances.
However, local villagers from four nearby areas have expressed concerns over land acquisition. They have requested either market value compensation or an alternate location for the airport. Some villagers claim they have not been compensated for land acquired 33 years ago.
Operational Issues
Salem Airport has faced interruptions in services due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges. Despite this, efforts to expand and modernize the airport are ongoing.
Once completed, the upgraded Salem Airport will support larger aircraft, improve regional connectivity, and contribute to the economic development of Tamil Nadu. However, the timeline for completion remains uncertain, as it depends on land acquisition, clearances, and funding.
Salem Airport's expansion represents a significant step toward enhancing air connectivity in Tamil Nadu. While challenges like land acquisition and community concerns need resolution, the project holds the promise of boosting regional development and accessibility in the long run.
