Surat is taking steps toward revolutionizing urban transport with the introduction of a Water Metro along the Tapi River. Following Kochi's successful model in Kerala, this project aims to make Surat the first city in Gujarat and only the second in India to embrace a water-based public transport system. The initiative combines sustainability and innovation, offering a greener mode of travel for residents and visitors alike.
The proposed Water Metro will operate along a 33 km stretch of the Tapi River, from the Singapore causeway to Kamrej and upstream to Dumas. An expert team from the Kochi Water Metro visited Surat to study the feasibility of this ambitious project. Their visit was facilitated by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), which is keen to explore the potential of water-based transport in the city.
Key Features of the Water Metro
The Water Metro will feature battery-operated boats with a capacity to carry 100 passengers each. These boats are designed to provide an eco-friendly alternative to conventional transport options. To ensure smooth connectivity, SMC plans to integrate Water Metro stations with the city's metro rail, Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), and local bus services.
Challenges in Implementation
The feasibility study identified several challenges. Unlike Kochi's tidal waterways, the Tapi River has unique conditions, including fluctuating water levels and strong river flows during the monsoon season. To address these challenges, a detailed survey and bathymetric analysis will be conducted to map the underwater features and assess riverbed conditions.
The team will also analyze rainfall patterns, flood levels, and the discharge from the Ukai Dam to evaluate the river's capacity to support such a transport system.
The Kochi experts, including coastal engineering specialist Nishanth K and transport engineer Arjun Krishna, are compiling a report based on data provided by SMC. This report will include critical insights into the Tapi River's characteristics, such as its water-carrying capacity and depth. It will act as a roadmap for further development of the Water Metro project.
SMC envisions the Water Metro as part of a broader transportation network. By linking it with metro rail, BRTS, and city buses, the project aims to make public transport more accessible and efficient for Surat's residents.
