Tarkarli: For Adventure and Serenity

Tarkarkli is one of the serene beaches of Maharashtra which is unfamiliar to most of us. A part of Sindhudurg district, Tarkarli is slowly becoming one of the attractive tourist hub for the serene beaches and white sand. Other than the 'Shuru' trees which gives a mesmerising panoramic view, small sailboats and hamlets also add to the picturesque backdrop.

You don't have to laze time just by sitting at the beaches.Tourists exploring this pristine place can indulge in watching dolphins which are rare but are mostly visible during January and February. As fishing is a major occupation of the people staying closeby, one can also enjoy fishing in the sea or the backwaters.

Adventure lovers have far more better options in Tarkarli as they can indulge themselves in various water sports. Snorkelling and scuba diving is widely practiced here. Banana Boat Ride, Ringo, Motor Boat Ride are other sports that are slowly gaining importance. One can view the corals and various species of fises below the pristine water of the sea while snorkelling.

White water rafting and boating are some other fun filled activities which one can indulge in. If you are in a group, you can opt for a hired boat and sail out to watch the diving dolphins and 'tsunami island' which is famous for various water sports. 'Tsunami Island' is mostly preferred for camping and relishing dinner. Places where water current is less, boatman will give you an opportunity to relish a dive into the sea.

Verdant greenery surrounds Tarkarli backwaters. Formed by the Karli river, the serenity and peaceful surrounding will compel you to get rid of all worries. This is where you get to feel the essence of staying in God's Own Country inspite of being in Maharashtra.

Houseboats are a good option to enjoy the backwaters. An overnight stay at Hiranyakeshi (A/C Luxury) or Karli (A/C Standard) will gift a memorable experience. Both these houseboats have double bedrooms ideally suited for 4 adults.

What else: Apart from being a part of nature, tourists can also enjoy temples, forts, traditional markets and villages in the vicinity. If one is planning to travel around Tarkarli, there are few other sightseeing options. Sindhudurg Fort which is considered to be the pride of Marathas is a must visit.

Aravali at Sindhudurg is an hour's distance from Tarkarli which can also be covered in a single day. Mochemad Beach, Sagareshwar Shiva Temple, Vayangani Beach, Malvan market, Sangam, Nivati Beach, Golden Rock, Rock Garden at Malwan and Malvan plateau are other places in and around .

Food: Eateries you enjoy at Tarkarli are mostly Malvani cuisine. It includes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Mixture of Maharashtra and Goa cuisines will tickle your tastebuds. Do not miss out Mori Masala or Shark curry. Fishes are the predominant dish of Tarkarli which is cooked with various spices.

How to Reach: Tarkarli is 535 km from Mumbai and 8km from Malvan. Dabolim Airport in Goa is the closest airport at a distance of 133 km. Kudal Railway station at 29km is the nearest railhead. Trains do not halt at Sindhudurg. Rickshaw or bus connection is also not proper enough from there.

Corals

If one is travelling by road, Malvan is the nearest accessible place. Both state transport and private buses run from different ares of Pune, Goa and Mumbai. Mumbai is accessible through NH4 and NH17.

Where to Stay: Accommodation options are available at Tarkarli, which are managed by Maharashtra Tourism. Cottages both A/C and non A/C are available on the beach. You can also opt to stay in luxuroius houseboats which might involve more expenditure both on staying and fooding. Deluxe Bamboo House and Konkani House are other options for a comfortable stay at Tarkarli.

Homestays managed by Government can also be booked beforehand. Some houses in Malvan village are given for rent where one can enjoy a peaceful stay with decent families. It is not only cheaper but also safe and healthy.
