A Garden For the Maids?

By: Akshatha Vinayak

In this modern world, taking dowry from the bride side is illegal. Forget about taking dowry; no one should even breathe the word dowry. Why are we discussing dowry here?! Well, Maharana Sangram Singh, not only got a beautiful bride but along with her came the 48 maids as dowry. To please his Queen, he gifted something for all her maidens; that is Saheliyon Ki Badi in Udaipur! Wow, what a generous king he must be.

Legends say that the King himself designed Saheliyon Ki Badi or Saheliyon Ki Bari. Even to this day, Maharaja Sangram Singh's efforts shine as one of the famous tourist places in Udaipur. Saheliyon Ki Badi, the Garden for Maidens, is a large ornate garden built for the royal ladies.

It must have been one of the best addas for the royal men to watch so many women chill out!

What is there in Saheliyon Ki Badi?

Saheliyon Ki Badi has lush green gardens, marble structures and most importantly fountains. Small lotus ponds in the midst of lawns and sculpted kiosks that make this one of the beautiful getaways in the city of Udaipur.

It is said, Saheliyon Ki Badi boasted of 2000 fountains at one point in time. However, only a few remain to this day. While we are talking about fountains, aren't you thinking how they got water?

We have to acknowledge the architectural marvel of those times. Saheliyon Ki Badi is constructed on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake; that is how the water was fed into these fountains!

What a scenic place for the royal ladies. It must have been very relaxing for all those women to enjoy a day out in the garden.

As per the records, Maharana Bhupal Singh also created rain fountains in the later years; an illusion where fountains danced when the ladies danced. Doesn't it remind us of a concept called 'rain dance' in the resorts? Well, the Kings have already thought and executed it in those times.

Saheliyon Ki Badi also has a small museum which has royal collections: Royal household items, paintings, artefacts and also the clothing used by the royal women.

When you visit Udaipur, don't miss out on this beautiful 'Garden for Maidens'. It is one of the best romantic escapades from the city!
