The city of Thane in Maharashtra is also known as the 'Lake City' as it has many lakes here. Located on the Salsette Islands, it is surrounded by hills on all sides. Bassein Fort

One of the places to visit in Thane is the Bassein Fort, also known as Vasai Fort as it is located in Vasai village. The fort was an old settlement of the Portuguese, who used to live here, and is said to have been built in 1532. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah for the Portuguese who came here to do business. Although now in a sorry state, tourists who come here can explore its ruins and also enjoy the scenic view it has to offer.

Vajreshwari

Vajreshwari

Vajreshwari is a tiny village that is home to the Goddess Vajreshwari and is located on the foothills of the Mandakini Mountains. It is known for its hot springs where tourists can take a relaxing dip in the hot water pools. It is now a health resort where tourists can try different natural healing medicines and therapies.

Upvan Lake

Upvan Lake

One of the most visited lakes in Thane is the Upvan Lake, located close to the Pokhran Area and is flanked by the Yeoor Hills. It is thronged by couples and teenagers who come to spend time with their loved ones and friends. Tourists visiting this lake can take in its scenic beauty and enjoy the cool winds that blow here. The best time to come here is early in the morning when it is nearly empty with just a few joggers.

Another tourist place to visit in Thane is the Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, an absolute delight for wildlife lovers and travellers as it houses numerous endangered and rare species of flora and fauna. Among the animals that roam here you can easily spot Sambars, Hyenas, Mouse Deer, Cheetas, Barking Deer, Panthers, Wild Boars, Jackals and Tigers. It is a perfect place to head to with you family for an adventure outing.

Masunda Talao

Masunda Talao

A tourist place to visit in Thane is the Masunda Talao, the most popular lake in the district. One of the prettiest lakes in the state, it offers many sports activities to the tourists coming here such as boating and water-scooters. It is also a perfect place to head to with the family for a picnic. There are many food stalls here that are known to serve up some of the lip-smacking local dishes. It is an ideal place to relax and rejuvenate yourself within the madness of the city.

Sudhagad Fort

Sudhagad Fort

Another place to visit in Thane is the Sudhagad Fort, also referred to as the Bhorapgad Fort. It is believed that this fort was built by a Brahmani king around 1436. There is a temple inside the fort dedicated to Bhorai Devi. Tourists visiting this fort today can still visit the shrine and pay respect to the goddess. It also offers a picturesque view of the region.

Naneghat Hills

Another tourist place in Thane is the Naneghat Hills, located close to the Malshej Ghat. At an elevation of 838.2 mt above sea level, it is a perfect location for trekkers and rock climbers. Also, these hills have many caves that supposedly were the homes of Brahmins, and you can see inscriptions in the Brahmi texts on the walls of these caves.

Kelva Beach

Kelva Beach

Another place to visit in Thane is the Kelva Beach, a popular vacation spot among the locals and tourists. The golden sand, the sea waves flowing onto the beach and the serenity of the place makes it perfect for relaxing and rejuvenating. You can also play games on the beach and during the evening a few food stalls open up serving mouthwatering snacks.

How to Reach Thane

By Air: The Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport is the nearest airport to Thane. There are several domestic and international flights that connect Mumbai to the rest of not only India, but the entire world.

By Train: The Thane Railway Station is a major railway junction that falls on the Central and Harbour Line. It is well-connected with nearly all the major cities in India.

By Road: Thane is well-linked to many cities and towns via road. The three major national highways that pass through Thane are the Mumbai- Ahmedabad Highway, the Mumbai-Agra Highway, and the Mumbai- Bangalore Highway. There are regular private tour and state owned buses that ply between Thane and other cities and towns.
