Rail passengers travelling across southern Tamil Nadu are likely to face inconvenience over the next two weeks as Southern Railway has announced several train cancellations, diversions, and short-term service changes. The changes are being made to facilitate yard remodelling work at Tirunelveli railway station, which is part of the ongoing Vanchi Maniyachchi-Nagercoil railway line doubling project.
Trains to be Affected Due to Important Work
As part of the revised schedule, eight train services have been completely cancelled during the construction period. Among the major trains affected is the Coimbatore-Nagercoil Express (16321/16322), which will not operate on the notified dates. Passengers travelling on this route have been advised to check train schedules before planning their journeys.
In addition to cancellations, several trains will not start or end their journeys at their usual stations. Instead, they will operate from alternative locations. For example, the Tambaram Antyodaya Express (20692) will originate from Dindigul on several days instead of its regular starting point. Similarly, the popular Nellai Express (12632) will run only from Vanchi Maniyachchi on June 27, 28, and 29, affecting passengers travelling to and from Tirunelveli.
Southern Railway has also announced route diversions for some services. The Guruvayur Express (16127) will be diverted through Pollachi and Palakkad. Because of this change, the train will bypass its normal route through Nagercoil, Tirunelveli, and Madurai during the affected period.
Reason Behind Train Cancellations
The railway authorities said these temporary changes are necessary to carry out important infrastructure upgrades at Tirunelveli. The yard remodelling work is expected to improve operational efficiency and support the broader railway doubling project between Vanchi Maniyachchi and Nagercoil. Once completed, the project will help increase line capacity, improve train movement, and enhance rail connectivity in the region.
