Nelong valley is a rocky desert located in the Gangotri National Park of Uttarakhand. At an altitude of 11,400 feet above the sea level, the valley has a terrain similar to that of Tibet! Long before Tibet was occupied by China, Nelong Valley was an essential trade route between the two countries and an intricate wooden bridge served as a route which can be still spotted here.
Similar to the valleys of Ladakh, Nelong has an opulent history and culture marred by political unrest and border conflicts. The villages in Nelong valley was vacated in the year 1962 during the Indo-China War and this amazing valley became an abode to the endless army camps since then.

Entry to this area had remained forbidden for civilians after the 1962 war and its a relief to a lot of travellers to know that the entry is no more prohibited. Yes, since last year, the valley is opened to tourists and travellers during the month of May - December on special permits citing the enormous potential of the valley which could be developed into a niche tourist destination. Though acquiring the permits can turn out to be a strenuous task, which might take a couple of days, the exceptionally beautiful and pristine valley of Nelong would make it up for everything.
How to reach Nelong valley : This spectacular valley is located in Gangotri National Park in Uttarkashi district. It's only 23 kilometres away from Bhaironghati , a place just eight kilometres ahead of the famous Gangotri shrine!
