Mangaluru is all set to enhance its charm as a tourist hotspot by keeping its beaches open at night. The Dakshina Kannada district administration has announced this initiative to attract more visitors and promote local tourism. To ensure the safety of tourists, the administration plans to install streetlights, surveillance cameras, and deploy lifeguards at the beaches.

Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan M.P. revealed that Panamburu Beach will be the first to welcome night-time visitors, with Thannirbhavi Blue Flag Beach and Thannirbhavi Beach next in line. Although the launch was initially planned for the end of the year, it has been slightly delayed and is now expected within the next two weeks after finalizing all safety measures.
Safety First for Night Beach Visits
This move follows the state government's recent decision to allow businesses in Bengaluru and other cities to operate until 1 am. While Mangaluru's pubs and restaurants will still follow regular timings, the introduction of night-time beach visits aims to draw more tourists. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal has supported the idea, emphasizing the importance of safety measures like lighting, surveillance, and lifeguards to ensure smooth operations.
Beach Festival for Year-End Celebrations
Adding to the excitement, a Beach Festival will be held at Thannirbhavi Beach on December 28 and 29 as part of the Karavali Utsav celebrations. This festival, organized by the district administration in collaboration with Rohan Corporation, promises a variety of attractions. Visitors can enjoy live performances by local artists, a sand sculpture competition, and water sports activities from 5:30 pm to 9 pm on both days.
The festival will officially begin on December 28 at 6:30 pm, with Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader inaugurating the event. A special highlight will be a performance by renowned singer and musician Raghu Dixit on December 29 at 7:30 pm.
Convenient Arrangements for Visitors
To accommodate the expected large crowds, special parking areas for two-wheelers and four-wheelers have been designated at four locations along Thannirbhavi Beach Road. The ferry service between Sulthan Bathery and Thannirbhavi will offer additional trips, and mini buses will be available to ensure easy access. Extra staff will be on hand to manage traffic and maintain order during the festival.
A Boost for Mangaluru's Tourism
These efforts aim to position Mangaluru as a top destination for year-end celebrations. Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan highlighted the administration's goal of showcasing Mangaluru as a leading tourist destination, with the Beach Festival serving as an annual event to promote the city's tourism potential. The tourism industry has welcomed this initiative as a major step toward boosting Mangaluru's appeal to travelers.
With night-time beach access and exciting festivals, Mangaluru is ready to offer a unique and memorable experience for tourists and locals alike.
