The proposed Kochi Water Metro service to Cochin International Airport is expected to make travel faster and more convenient for passengers. According to officials, the journey from Aluva to the airport is likely to take less than 30 minutes. At present, travelling by road from Aluva to the airport usually takes between 25 and 50 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Kochi Water Metro Service to Cochin International Airport Project
Officials said the project is part of a larger plan to create an integrated transport system that offers people multiple travel options while reducing traffic congestion. By connecting the metro and water transport systems, authorities hope to make commuting easier for both residents and air travellers.
Examining the Problems Related to Proposed Route
As part of the study, officials are examining whether the proposed route could face problems such as flooding or saltwater intrusion. They explained that the Eloor regulator prevents seawater from flowing upstream into this section of the Periyar River, so saltwater is not expected to affect the Water Metro route. They are also studying ways to ensure that floodwaters do not affect the airport during heavy rains.
Additional Water Metro Projects
Another aspect is how the proposed Nedumbassery railway station can be connected with the Water Metro network in the future. However, officials said the airport link will be given priority, while additional routes to other destinations may be planned later. They are also reviewing operational details, including service timings and challenges during evening hours. Once the pre-feasibility study is completed, the report will be submitted to the government for approval.
Kochi Water Metro Service's Proposed Plan
Under the proposed plan, passengers will begin their journey near Aluva Metro station. A skywalk will connect the metro station to the Water Metro terminal, allowing easy transfer between the two services. The boats will travel along the Periyar River and Chengalthodu before reaching the rear side of Cochin International Airport. The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) also plans to set up a check-in facility at the Water Metro terminal, ensuring passengers can complete airport check-in before entering the airport.
