In the Path of Lesser Known Forts in Delhi

We often come across write-ups about the famous monuments. Even our travel plans often take us to these attractions only. So, tourists hardly try to explore and know about the unexplored places. Here is a list of lesser known forts that're in Delhi.

Delhi is a city which has been a prime centre for so many dynasties in the past. Hence, the heritage of the place is as varied as the history itself. Of course, the famous attractions have survived the times and thus allows to explore more. Unfortunately, there are many other monumental structures that have been destroyed due to age and battles.

 Tughlaqabad Fort

Tughlaqabad Fort

Tughlaqabad Fort was a dream project of Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, the founder of Tuhghlaq Dynasty. The fort was started in 1321 soon after Tughlaq's capture of the region. However, his dream to make it one of the best forts was sabotaged as he died within a short time after that (1324). Today it is a ruined fort but many parts of Tughlaqabad fort has stood the test of times.

Purana Qila Fort

Purana Qila Fort

Purana Qila was built by Sher Shah Suri. However, some parts of the fort is said to be built by Humayun as the region was under him till Sher Shah invaded. Interestingly, the region of Purana Qila is believed to be the city of Indraprastha (capital of the Pandavas in Mahabharatha).

Salimgarh Fort

Salimgarh Fort

The history of Salimgarh Fort seems like a roller coaster ride. It came under many rulers and served as an important location in the course of history. Salimgarh Fort was built by Salim Shah Suri (son of Sher Shah Suri), later it was captured by Humayun. During the rule of Aurangzeb it was made into a prison. Finally, in the colonial era the British used it as a good location.

Qila Rai Pithora

Qila Rai Pithora

Qila Rai Pithora is a 12th century architecture built by Prithviraj Chauhan (Chauhan Rajput Dynasty). The remains of the fort are scattered across the southern part of Delhi. Today, it can be found in the parts of Saket, Mehrauli, Qutub Complex and Vasant Kunj. It is one of the lesser known forts in Delhi.

Jahanpanah

Jahanpanah

Jahanpanah was a fortified city built to protect against the invasion of Mongols. It was constructed by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq. Today, only ruins of the fort are scattered across the region. The actually fort or the city doesn't exist. However, some buildings inside the fort remains in a destroyed state.

Siri Fort

Siri Fort

Siri Fort is an ancient fort built by Ala-ud-Din Khilji. The ruins of the fort indicate the architectural finesse of those times. Unfortunately, Siri Fort has been destroyed over time and only few sections of the fort remains in a ruined state.

It is a must to explore these age old forts along with the famous tourist places in Delhi. These structures may not be as well maintained as other monuments but certainly they're worth knowing about.

Some of these forts also belong to pre-Mughal era and showcase the architectural elegance of Adil Shahi Dynasty. A tour around these historical places is a must in Delhi.
