This beautiful Fort was considered as an impregnable fort hill in ancient times. Built of granite blocks ranging from 30 to 40 ft in height, this marvel was built in the 9th century AD. Deep in the heart of the jungle, surrounded by rolling hills, the location of Kavaledurga Fort is charismatic as well as strategic!

The strategic location of the fort has compelled many rulers to take control over this magnificent fort! From the Belagutti king Cheluvarangappa in the 14th century to Tipu Sulthan, Kavaledurga Fort in Shimoga has been a desire of many rulers! It is undoubtedly one of the best forts in Karnataka.

This fort is around 8 km in circumference and has fort walls which are 30 to 40 ft tall with watch towers at selected spots. The fort encompasses a considerable area that can be visualised as five steps accessible by a pathway, passing through five gates. The beautiful remnants of the past are falling into the bowels of oblivion here! What remains of the ruined fort are two fortresses and a shrine of Mylareeshwara.

The fort is said to had 15 temples in its abode of which only 3 are present now. The remaining of, once splendid and grandeur, royal palace with Darbar hall is spotted here. One could also spot the ruins of Ammunition houses, pools, jails, stables of elephants and horses etc.

Another interesting fact about this famous fort in Shimoga is its mesmerizing water channels! As one explores the fort, a cave with a small pool of fresh water could be spotted. Legends say that the mace of Bheema was used to dig out this water source!
