Kanipakam is known for the Ganesha temple in Chittoor. Here the elephant-god is said to be a swayambu ( self-manifested) and many tales are attached to it.
The popular legend is about the three brothers who found a big stone blocking their way while digging a well. Upon forcefully hitting the rock, blood is said to have oozed out making the water red. Surprised, they noticed a rock and realised that it looks like Ganesha.

Kanipakam is located on the banks of the river Bahuda at Irala Mandal. Interestingly, there are several legends relating to the Bahuda river. Once two brothers were punished by the king; their arms were chopped off. Surprisingly, they get their hands back by taking a holy dip in the river. Hence, Bahuda river also holds a great importance in Kanipakam.
Vinayaka or Ganesha is the remover of obstacles; this swayambu idol is said to have created miracles over the years. The Lord is said to bless all the wishes of devotees. Many family problems get solved after 'taking an oath' in front of Lord Ganesha here.
