Thiruvonam is a significant festival celebrated in Kerala, India. It is the final day of the ten-day-long Onam festival, which marks the homecoming of King Mahabali. Legend of Thiruvonam
In Hindu mythology, King Mahabali was an ideal ruler who was deeply adored by his subjects for his righteous and just rule. One day, Lord Vishnu decided to test the king's humility and devotion. Taking the form of Vamanan, a dwarf Brahmin boy, Vishnu approached King Mahabali. Vamanan humbly asked Mahabali for a favor - he requested three steps of land to live on.
Intrigued by this simple request, Mahabali agreed without hesitation. Little did he know that Vamanan was none other than Lord Vishnu in disguise. Suddenly, before everyone's eyes, the dwarf form of Vamanan began to grow rapidly in size until he appeared as an enormous giant. With his first step, he covered the entire earth and with his second step, he enveloped all of heaven. Astonished by this display of power and divinity, King Mahabali realized that Vamanan was no ordinary being.
As Vamanan prepared to take his third step, there were no more lands left for him to conquer. In a gesture of unwavering loyalty and commitment to keeping his word, Mahabali offered himself as a stepping stone for Lord Vishnu's third step. He humbly placed his head before Vamanan so that the promise made could be fulfilled. Touched by King Mahabali's selflessness and devotion towards truthfulness and duty even at such a cost to himself, Lord Vishnu granted him a boon.
He allowed Mahabali to visit his beloved kingdom once every year on Thiruvonam day – which is considered one of the most auspicious days in Kerala during Onam festival celebrations. And so it came to pass that every year on Thiruvonam day (the day when the star Thiruvonam aligns with the moon), King Mahabali returns from Patala, the netherworld, to visit his people and witness their happiness. It is said that on this day, the spirit of Mahabali pervades Kerala, and people engage in various festivities to commemorate his benevolent reign as a symbol of justice, equality, and unconditional love for his subjects.
Preparations for Thiruvonam
The preparations begin days before Thiruvonam with cleaning houses and decorating them with flowers known as Pookalam. People buy new clothes called 'Onakkodi' to wear on this auspicious day. Additionally, women prepare a grand feast called 'Onasadya,' consisting of various vegetarian dishes served on banana leaves.

Thiruvonam Rituals
On the day of Thiruvonam, people wake up early and take a ritual bath. They then offer prayers at temples and create elaborate Pookalams in front of their homes. Another significant ritual is 'Valla Sadhya,' where devotees prepare a separate meal as an offering to King Mahabali.
