Guntur, Of Temples and History

Guntur is a city in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, located roughly 60 km from the Bay of Bengal. The city lies on the south eastern side of Hyderabad, the capital of both Telengana and Seemandhra.

Guntur is a very important part of Andhra Pradesh as it is considered the cradle of learning and administration. It is regarded as one of the most developed cities in the state because it has the maximum number of learning institutes and administrative organisations(use British spelling).

Here are a few tourist places you should visit in Guntur namely, Kondaveedu Fort, the Undavalli caves, Amaravati, Uppalapadu Gardens and Prakasam Barrage.

Kondaveedu Fort

Kondaveedu Fort is part of the rich historical past of Guntur city. The fort is situated around 12 km from Guntur, and can be reached easily via well-maintained roads. The fort itself contains 21 structures. The structures are in ruins for the most part, but they still offer a deep insight into the mysteries associated with the fort. Many people visit the fort to enjoy the scenic beauty amidst which the fort has been built. Some tourists also prefer trekking and hiking in the area because the terrain is suitable for doing so. Very close to the fort is located the Gopinatha temple and the Kathulabave temple. The gateway to the fort is located at the base of the hill on which the fort stands.

Kotappakonda

Kotappakonda, a popular place to visit in Guntur, is a village situated on the south-western side of the city. It is also popularly known as Trikutaparvatam because of the three-peaked hill that lies close to the village. There are many hills surrounding the village, but the most popular of these are the peaks of Trikutachalam or Trikutadri. These three peaks can be seen clearly from all directions of the village. The peaks have been named after the three Hindu Gods who form the 'Triumvirate' in Hindu mythology; namely Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Sitanagaram

Sitanagaram, a popular tourist place in Guntur, lies on the eastern coast of India. The town is believed to have been in existence since the Treta Yuga, which ended 1.6 million years ago. The town finds mention in the Hindu epic Ramayana. The town is famous for the Someswara Swamy Temple. Legend goes that Lord Rama wept at the site of the temple when he came to know that his wife Sita had been abducted by the Lanka king Ravana. The name of the town that is derived from the hair of Sita, bears testimony to this fact. Apart from the temple, the town is famous for its Vedic University.

Mangalagiri

Mangalagiri is a small town located in the Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh. It is an important tourist place in Guntur. The word ‘Mangalagiri' is roughly translated as The Holy Hill. It is famous for its temples and the fine quality of cotton cloth that is produced in the town. The famous Lakshmi Narayan Swami temple is located in this town, and many devotees as well as tourists visit the temple to seek blessings from God. The temple has been built over a hill. This hill used to be an active volcano hundreds of years ago.

Uppalapadu Nature Conservation

Uppalapadu Nature Conservation is a place you must visit in Guntur and is famous for the water tanks that attract a large number of migratory birds to the Conservation Park. Exotic, rare and endangered species of birds make the park their home each year for a few months. The birds include the endangered Spot-Billed Pelicans and the exotic Painted Storks. However, this has not stopped the tourists from thronging the park in large numbers year after year. The bird lovers come to this place to see so many exotic species of birds roosting together at one place.

How to Reach Guntur

By Air: There is no airport at Guntur. The nearest domestic airport is at Vijayawada, that is around 96 km away from Guntur. The nearest international airport is at Hyderabad around 250 km away.

By Train: The railway station at Guntur is well connected with many cities and towns, thanks to the solid network of Southern Railways. The city receives regular train services from cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Vijayawada and many more.

By Road: Guntur is the regional headquarters for the State Road Transport System. Therefore, the bus services that ply to and from the city are regular and excellent. The city lies in the path of many national highways including those coming from Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. The Hyderabad highway can take you to Delhi and Mumbai.
