Gujarat Tourism – The Calm Town of Porbandar

Porbandar, a famous city in Gujarat, is located near the Arabian Sea. It is the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation and also said to be the birth place of Sudama (close friend of Lord Krishna).

It is now becoming a tourist hub as many flock here to know more and see the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Porbandar has a few attractions of its own which are either historical or religious. Here is a look at the places you should visit while in Porbandar.

Kirti Mandir

Kirti Mandir is one of the famous tourist destinations of Porbandar. A memorial temple built to honour Mahatma Gandhi.

This complex houses the ancenstral house of the Gandhis' where Mahatma Gandhi was born. Also known as the 'Temple of Peace', the Kirti Mandir is counted amongst the popular monuments of the nation.

Huzoor Palace

The Huzoor Palace at Porbandar was built by Natwar Shah. This sprawling structure resembling a European mansion is located at the end of the beach.

Surrounded by beautiful gardens and water fountains, the palace faces the Arabian Sea.

Sudama Mandir

The Sudama Mandir in Porbandar holds a lot of historic and religious importance. The temple was constructed to pay obeisance to Sudama, the childhood friend and devotee of Lord Krishna.

A large number of devotees, especially newly wed Rajasthani Kshatriya couples, flock to the place every year.

How to Reach Porbandar

By Air: Porbandar has a new terminal building built by the Airport Authority of India and there are daily flights to Mumbai from the Porbandar airport.

By Rail: Porbandar has a railway station and the city is well connected by rail to all the major cities of the state and country. There are trains to Okha, Rajkot, Mumbai and Bhanwad daily. Also, there are trains to Delhi, Motihari and Howrah.

By Road: Porbandar city is connected to Rajkot and Ahmedabad through the national highway 8B and is connected to the cities of Dwarka and Jamnagar in the north and Bhavnagar and Verval in South through the NH 8E Ext.
